Exceptional Italian Mid-Century dining set dating from the 1950s, centered around an elegant dining table by Dassi, paired with a set of eight sculptural dining chairs by Paolo Buffa.

The table is distinguished by its sophisticated combination of materials and refined architectural presence. The large rectangular top features a striking deep violet / purple glass surface, framed by a richly finished wooden structure with subtle contrasting detailing along the perimeter.

The sculptural base is particularly noteworthy. Two substantial wooden supports rise from an elegant Verde Alpi marble plinth, creating a strong architectural composition while retaining the refinement associated with the finest Italian furniture of the period. The lighter wood panels on the supports are enriched with carved decorative motifs, introducing an artisanal element to the otherwise rigorous geometry of the table.

The unusual combination of violet glass, warm-toned wood and Verde Alpi marble gives the piece a distinctive and highly decorative character, while remaining unmistakably rooted in the vocabulary of postwar Italian design.

The table is accompanied by eight elegant dining chairs by Paolo Buffa, whose slender proportions and gently curved lines provide an excellent visual counterpoint to the substantial architecture of the table.

Each chair features a refined dark-finished wooden frame with elegantly tapered and slightly curved legs. The upper back is defined by an open sculptural frame, while the rear of the upholstered backrest is finished with a beautiful wooden panel, emphasizing the chairs' cabinetmaking quality from every angle.

The seats and backrests are upholstered in a sophisticated soft blue-green / sage velvet, finished with decorative nailhead trim along the edges. The restrained color of the upholstery works particularly well with both the deep violet surface of the table and the green tones of the Verde Alpi marble.

Together, the table and eight chairs form a remarkably cohesive dining ensemble, combining sculptural form, luxurious materials and traditional Italian craftsmanship. The contrast between the monumental table and the visually lighter chairs gives the set a particularly sophisticated presence.

A distinctive example of Italian Mid-Century Modern design, equally suited to an important period interior or as a statement dining ensemble within a contemporary setting.

Italy, circa 1950s.
