Rare and highly sculptural early chandelier designed by Pietro Chiesa for Fontana Arte, Italy, dating to the early 1950s.

An exceptional example of Chiesa's early lighting design for Fontana Arte, the chandelier is distinguished by an extraordinary composition of five large individually shaped and curved glass panels, a sculptural brass framework, and multiple light sources arranged within delicate ivory-colored floral fittings.

The chandelier is conceived as an architectural yet distinctly organic composition. Five substantial curved glass panels radiate from the central brass structure, overlapping at different heights and angles. Each panel has a broad, asymmetrical petal-like profile and rises gently toward its outer edge, creating a fluid silhouette reminiscent of an abstract flower in bloom.

The glass is predominantly clear and transparent, with the characteristic subtle green tone visible along its substantial polished edges. The thickness of the glass and the pronounced curvature of each individual panel give the chandelier remarkable depth and physical presence while preserving an overall impression of transparency and visual lightness.

Beneath the glass structure, numerous light sources are distributed around the central body in sculptural clusters. The bulbs emerge from light ivory/cream-colored petal-like fittings, whose folded and flared profiles introduce a second, more delicate botanical element to the composition. These pale organic forms contrast beautifully with the transparent glass and the warm golden tones of the brass.

The structural system itself is an integral part of the design. Gracefully curved brass arms extend outward from a sculptural central hub, supporting the individual glass panels while remaining deliberately visible through them. The chandelier is suspended from a long, slender brass stem terminating in an elegantly shaped brass ceiling canopy.

Of particular interest is the chandelier's early construction, consistent with Pietro Chiesa's production for Fontana Arte during the 1940s and 1950s. This is especially apparent in the distinctive configuration of the exposed bulb holders and their sculptural ivory-colored fittings, together with the hand-assembled brass framework and the substantial individually curved glass panels.

Rather than being concealed within a later, more standardized lighting system, the individual bulb holders remain clearly visible and form an integral part of the composition. These constructional details reflect the highly artisanal character of early Fontana Arte production during Pietro Chiesa's lifetime and contribute significantly to the historical and collectible importance of the piece.

Particularly impressive when viewed from below, the chandelier reveals the full complexity of its construction. The five large glass panels open outward like the petals of an abstract flower, while the curved brass arms and clusters of ivory-colored fittings and bulbs create a second, more intricate floral composition beneath them.

The combination of transparent curved glass, brass and pale sculptural elements gives the chandelier an exceptional three-dimensional quality. Depending on the viewing position, the glass panels overlap, visually merge or reveal the underlying brass structure, allowing the fixture to present a different composition from virtually every angle.

When illuminated, the numerous bulbs produce a warm and atmospheric light. Their reflections multiply across the curved glass surfaces and brass components, while the ivory-colored fittings are softly illuminated from within and around their edges. The warm light also accentuates the subtle green coloration visible along the substantial glass edges.

When switched off, the chandelier assumes a more architectural and sculptural character, allowing the exceptional geometry, thickness and curvature of the glass to become the dominant visual elements.

This chandelier represents a particularly early and significant example of Pietro Chiesa's lighting design for Fontana Arte, dating from the formative decades in which Chiesa played a central role in defining the company's visual and technical language. It exemplifies his sophisticated integration of glass, metal and light, transforming a functional lighting fixture into a suspended architectural sculpture.

Despite its substantial scale, the transparency of the glass prevents the chandelier from appearing visually heavy. Its dramatic proportions and strong sculptural presence make it particularly effective above a dining table, as demonstrated in the accompanying interior setting, while it would be equally compelling in a large living room, entrance hall, reception area or other significant interior.
