An exceptional Italian Mid-Century Modern sideboard with integrated mirror and suspended glass shelf, designed by Silvio Cavatorta in the 1950s.
The piece is a particularly refined example of Cavatorta’s ability to combine traditional Italian cabinetmaking with the architectural lightness that characterized the most sophisticated furniture of the postwar period.
The main cabinet is conceived as a long, low horizontal volume with six generously proportioned drawers arranged in two symmetrical rows. The richly figured veneer is carefully matched across the drawer fronts, creating a continuous vertical grain and giving the façade considerable visual depth. Softly rounded edges and the molded perimeter of the case temper the strict geometry of the composition.
A striking counterpoint is provided by the slender metal structure that rises from the floor along both sides of the cabinet. Its tapered, splayed legs continue upward beyond the wooden case to support both the large rectangular mirror and the floating glass shelf. This uninterrupted structural gesture gives the piece an unusually light, almost suspended appearance despite its substantial storage capacity.
The mirror is enclosed within a narrow wooden frame whose rounded corners echo those of the cabinet below. Between the mirror and the wooden top sits a long transparent glass shelf, supported by finely executed metal brackets. The shelf introduces an additional horizontal plane while preserving the visual openness of the composition.
Particularly noteworthy are the original metal drawer pulls. Their restrained geometric design, combining a shaped backplate with a gently projecting handle, complements the elegant metal framework and provides a sophisticated contrast with the warmth and depth of the wooden surfaces.
The sideboard has been completely and professionally restored while carefully preserving its original 1950s appearance. The restoration was deliberately conservative: all of the original components have been retained, with no elements replaced or redesigned. The wooden surfaces were restored to recover their original depth, grain and lustre while respecting the character of the period, and the metal elements were carefully treated while maintaining their authentic vintage appearance.
The result is a piece that retains the integrity and visual character of the original Cavatorta design rather than appearing newly manufactured or over-restored.
Its combination of storage, display shelf and mirror makes the piece particularly versatile. It can function as a sideboard, dresser, bedroom cabinet or sophisticated dressing console, while its sculptural metal framework gives it a strong architectural presence suitable for both Mid-Century and contemporary interiors.
A distinctive example of Italian 1950s design, combining fine cabinetmaking, elegant proportions and Cavatorta’s characteristic exploration of visually lightweight structures.
